.DISCUSSION...
Current satellite imagery shows a cut-off low approaching the
southern California coast, with bands of high cirrus clouds over
our CWA. This system may produce very light rainfall for the
southern most part of our region, as well as on the highest
peaks of the Sierra Nevada. A slight cooldown can be expected
today compared to yesterday`s temperatures, with further cooling
tomorrow.
This Wednesday is the start of a trough dropping down from the
Gulf of Alaska and bringing in large amounts of moisture tot he
region. Moderate rainfall can be expected for the San Joaquin
Valley and the Sierra Foothills. The Sierra Nevada mountains are
expecting to see heavy snowfall above 4000 feet, and moderate
snowfall above 3000 feet. Snow levels are expected to start out
around 6000 feet on Tuesday, before falling to around 3000 feet
by Thursday. This will then result in snowfall for the Kern
County Mountains and along the mountain passes of Tejon and
Tehachapi.
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the Sierra Nevada
Mountains from Tuesday evening through Thursday evening, due to
heavy snow through that period. 1 to 3 feet is expected for
elevations above 4000 feet and up to 4 feet can be expected for
the highest elevations of the mountains. A Winter Weather
Advisory has been issued for the Lower Sierra Nevada for that
same time period, with snow totals of 6 to 12 inches between
3000 and 4000 feet. A Winter Weather Advisory has also been
issued for the Kern County Mountains from 5 PM Wednesday through
5 AM Friday, with snow totals of 2 to 6 inches above 4000 feet
and up to 15 inches in the highest elevations. With this
snowfall, winds along the Sierra Crest and Kern mountains will
be strong, with the Sierra Nevada expecting 55 mph wind gusts
and the Kern Mountains expecting 45 mph wind gusts.
In the desert and along the West Side Hills will be strong
winds, with the Mojave Desert Slopes likely seeing the
strongest winds of 30 to 40 mph sustained winds and gusts up to
65 mph. The Kern Desert is expecting sustained winds of 20 to 30
mph and wind gusts up to 50 mph. These winds are expected to
start Wednesday morning and go through Friday evening. A High
Wind Warning has been issued for the Slopes and a Wind Advisory
for the Desert, both going into effect at 11 AM Wednesday and
going through 5 PM Friday. The West Side Hills remains under a
High Wind Watch at this time, but will likely become a Wind
Advisory. Winds on that side are expected to be 15 to 25
sustained and gust up to 45 mph.
Moderate to heavy rainfall can be expected for the Sierra Nevada
foothills with this system, as well. Current probabilities for 2
inches of rainfall on Thursday is 35 to 65 percent for the
Foothills. Moderate rainfall can also be expected for the
Valley on Thursday, with a 40 to 65 percent chance for 0.75
inches of rain on Thursday.
The unsettled weather doesn`t look to be stopping any time in
the next two weeks, with another couple systems on the horizon
that may impact our CWA. The first is a somewhat weak trough
closely following the system coming through on Wednesday, which
may bring in a small amount of moisture to the region. This
trough may then strengthen once it passes the Rockie Mountains,
but precipitation chances are small so far. The next system of
note may come through next Monday, though current probabilities
show it may not drop as much precipitation as the system coming
up this week.
